Integrated Mine Technical Training Programme (IMTT)

In recognition of the growing mining industry and the apparent lack of the necessary skills, the Chamber has adopted a new project under the name Integrated Mine Technical Training (IMTT). The general observation is that the post VETA and full Technician Certificate (FTC) qualifications are not aligned with the skills and knowledge competencies required by the highly technical mining operations, hence the dire need to consider ways to upgrade to such training to meet the growing demand in terms of practicality, academic and facilities requirements.

The project concept aims at addressing the ever-increasing need to satisfy the demand for artisan cadre in the growing mineral industry to ensure that they are industry ready. The programme also allows a competency-based promotion within the ranks and producing 21st century artisans.

The integrated Mine Technical Programme (IMTT) has been designed to ensure highest quality training standards, employee development, national and international accreditation and establish representative Management Council. This will essentially consist of primary representatives; secondary representatives will be; artisanal mining, Private sector, industry and works, agriculture and foreign college representatives.

In carrying out this project two institutions have been identified:
The Arusha Technical College (NACTE) will be the Centre of Theoretical Excellence due to its many attributes; good location, conducive environment, good access, high discipline and good management.

The Moshi VETA College has been designated the Centre of practical Excellence with attributes similar to those on the Arusha Technical College,

The envisaged date of implementation date is 2008 and the project charter and MOU are already in place.

Community Policing Programme (CPP)

Exploration and mining sites have been facing banditry whereby money and minerals have been stolen and even people have lost their lives in the process. This is a programme initiated by Ministry of Public Security, which is organized by the community in order to reduce residential crime. The mission of the community-policing programme is to promote safety, security and quality of life for all residents in the community.

The project involves inspector general of police, Assistant police Commissioner, community policing and Crime Prevention Officer, Barrick Regional Security Manager, North Mara Mine General manager. US Military Attache and the Canadian high Commissioner. The outcome of the initial phase using North Mara as trial will be emulated by other mining companies.

Artisanal And Small Scale Mining Project

The mining industry, as represented by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy is confident that if formalized, empowered and adequately supported, Artisinal and Small Scale Mining(ASM) can become a more advantageous activity for miners themselves, for the communities in which they live and for the government of Tanzania.

TCME realize that that poverty alleviation is central to the social responsibility of the private sector and it is through responsible corporate citizenship that large scale mining companies will secure a valid and durable 'social license' to operate. As members of the formal mining sector, we are committed to engaging meaningfully with our host communities and other stakeholders in order to ensure that mining makes a lasting contribution to our areas of operation and the country as a whole.

This project is a proclamation that the Mining Industry is willing to work in partnership, with both Government and other stakeholders, to formalize and support and transform artisanal and small scale mining communities to modernity. Transformation of ASM sub sector will necessitate addressing issues including among others access to training and educational in appropriate mining and processing techniques, occupational health and safety and environmental management.

Recognition of the magnitude and importance of the ASM challenge led to the establishment of the ASM sub committee within the Chamber to be used as a platform for coordinated engagement and action.
